Review: “That Sugar Film”
I'm always on the lookout for a good movie, and when I heard about “That Sugar Film” I bumped it right to the top of my watch list!
The premise is that a healthy 30-something (who hadn’t eaten refined sugar in about 5 years) would change his diet for 60 days. He would eat the same number of total calories per day as his normal diet BUT would swap out his calorie-dense 'good fats' (such as nuts and avocados) and instead eat supposedly healthy foods (such as smoothies, nonfat yogurt and muesli) that are high in sugar instead. His plan was to increase his sugar intake to that of an average Australian (40 teaspoons per day!) and see what would happen to his body.
You’ll be amazed when he manages to consume nearly 30 teaspoons of sugar for breakfast - without a sugary cereal in sight - or a similar amount of sugar in a child's lunch box that doesn’t have a single sweet, chocolate bar or soda. That's all I'll say for now because there are a few spoilers, but I'd love for everyone to watch this movie! It may make a huge difference in how you approach sugar and the possible consequences of eating what is considered an ‘average’ amount of sugar.
It was entertaining as well as informative, and probably shocking to people who think they are making healthy choices. There are so many hidden sugars! While I already knew most of the facts being presented I couldn’t help but be horrified to see it laid out so plainly.
Absolutely everyone should watch this…
If you don’t have Amazon Prime, PLEASE just take home this one point: 1 teaspoon of sugar is approximately 4g. Take a look at the nutrition label for some of the non-sweet food you buy. When you work out the conversion of grams to teaspoons ask yourself whether you really intended to consume that much sugar - I suspect the answer is no.
