Discovering New Foods
Can you name a food that you hated growing up but that you now LOVE?
Everyone has one! For me, it is seafood. Specifically, SALMON.
Growing up, I wasn’t a big fan of fish. I would have the occasional fish fry; it was usually haddock, which is pretty mild. To be honest, I was usually only excited by the side of fries that would come with it. I simply didn’t like anything that actually tasted fishy.
Fast forward 30 years.
My wife has always been a huge fan of all seafood and when we were dating we would sometimes have separate meals so she could have it (yes, I was that resistant to fish!). She would tease me about it and offer to share but I always resisted.
I vividly remember one night when I was desparately hungry and there simply wasn’t anything else available, so I finally gave in and tried it. I expected to have to choke it down but I was REALLY hungry and just needed something.
It’s not an exageration to say the first bite was life changing!!!
She had prepared it with amazing spices on top - a combination of thyme, rosemary, basil, sage, and lavender (herbs de provence) and cooked it to perfection so that the skin on the bottom was crispy and salty. I couldn’t believe I actually enjoyed it. After that, I was “hooked”.
Thankfully, I have access to amazing, fresh seafood all the time. We buy fresh, Norwegian salmon nearly every weekend and have it with brown rice, and roasted broccoli as our traditional Sunday dinner. It’s AMAZING and my favorite meal.
When we are out at a restaurant and salmon is on the menu, 9 out of 10 times I am going to order it. It is just one of those foods that makes me feel good and like I’m indulging at the same time- must be all the omega-3s :)
We like to change it up with other fishes (swordfish is a new favorite!) and I can hardly remember life before seafood!
